Performance of Relief Wells Along Missouri River Levees, 1951-1952 Floods.

Abstract

A number of relief well systems were installed along levees on the Missouri River control underseepage and sand boils. Three such well systems, including appurtenant piezometers, have been installed along levees at (North) Kansas City, Mo., Omaha, Nebr., and Council Bluffs, Iowa, to control underseepage and measure subsurface hydrostatic pressures. During the 1951 and 1952 floods on the Missouri River data were obtained on their effectiveness in controlling underseepage. These data have been compared with values computed in the design of the systems to evaluate the adequacy of the design criteria and methods used.
