Outlet Works and Spillway for Garrison Dam, Missouri River, North Dakota: Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

Model investigations of Garrison Dam were concerned primarily with the hydraulic performance of the spillway and flood-control tunnels; however, a study also was made of the passage of diversion flows through the power tunnels. Four undistorted models were used in accomplishing the investigations: (a) a 1:25-scale model of the flood-control tunnels, (b) a 1:50-scale model of the stilling basin for the flood-control tunnels and of the temporary stilling basin for the power tunnels, (c) a 1:100-scale comprehensive model of the spillway, and (d) a 1:41.6-scale model of the spillway crest. In addition, supplementary tests were made to determine cavitation tendencies of certain elements of the flood-control tunnels and operating characteristics of the penstock gate seals.
