Growth and Mechanical Properties of the Whiskers of Boron and Some Borides.

Abstract

Whiskers of beta-rhombohedral boron were prepared by heating boron pieces in boron nitride crucibles, both in an inert gas atmosphere and in vacuum in the temperature range 1850-1950C. The elastic modulus of these whiskers and tensile strengths are discussed. During this work, whiskers of CaB6, B4C, and B72 were also ovserved to form due to the presence of impurities in BN and in the argon. Whiskers of gamma- TaB also formed as a result of the interaction of BN and the tantalum susceptro used. (Author Modified Abstract)
