Meaningfulness (M) Values and Common Associates for Paralogs and Words of CVCVC Format.

Abstract

Associative aspects of verbal materials have been shown in numerous investigations to be potent determinants of verbal behavior. This research calibrated 75 words and paralogs of CVCVC format on meaningfulness (m) and identified their common associates. Besides the probability (p) of each common associate, its median ordinal position (o) in continued word association was determined. Operational definitions of two categories of CVCVC paralogs permit the construction of additional items as needed. As a source of verbal items for research use, the report is augmented by two appendixes. Appendix A lists other published sources of associatively scaled material. Appendix B is a complete list of CVCVC words as given in the Thorndike-Lorge list with their frequencies of usage indicated. (Author)
