Spillway and Conduits for Table Rock Dam, White River, Missouri: Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

The spillway of Table Rock Dam will be a 531-ft-long, concrete, gravity, gate-controlled, overflow section with crest shape based on a 41-ft head though the maximum expected head is 46 ft. Four 4- by 9-ft conduits through the left side of the spillway will release small flows into the 250-ft-long, hydraulic-jump type stilling basin surmounted with two rows of baffle piers and an end sill. Four models were used to determine the adequacy of the stilling basin design under both spillway and conduit discharges, and to investigate the conduit outlet-portal design. As originally designed, the outlet portals flared from 4 ft to 33 ft wide, the flared walls forming a serrated section at the toe of the spillway. The models included: (a) a 1:12-scale model for studying stilling basin action under conduit flows; (b) a 1:20-scale model of a conduit outlet portal; (c) a 1:50-scale spillway section model for studying stilling basin action and spillway crest efficiency; and (d) a 1:100-scale comprehensive model for observing over-all flow conditions.
