Spillway and Outlet Works, Townshend Dam and Reservoir, West River, Vermont; Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

Tests on a 1:50-scale model were concerned primarily with hydraulic performance of the L-sahped side-channel spillway and longitudinal discharge channel, and over-all performance of the spillway and single-tunnel outlet works. For structural stability, the vertical upstream face of the weir was changed to a 3-on-1 slope during the tests. The tests revealed that the discharge-channel floor could be raised considerably. With these changes, the head on the spillway at the design discharge (200,000 cfs) was 25.5 ft; the computed head was 25.00 ft. At this discharge, the effect of the L-shaped crest was equivalent to reducing the length of a straight crest by 37.9 ft. Bottom velocities along the upstream face of the dam near the spillway abutment reached 10 fps, indicating need for riprap protection. (Author)
