Stilling Basin for Warrior Dam, Warrior River, Alabama; Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

The performance of the tainter-gate type spillway and stilling basin for Warrior Dam was studied on two section models constructed to undistorted scales of 1:60 and 1:20. The stilling basin is to be a horizontal apron with two rows of baffle piers and a low end sill. The exit channel is to be protected with a riprap blanket. The spillway and stilling basin were found to function satisfactorily as originally designed; however, revisions were tested in attempts to improve basin performance further and reduce construction costs. Spillway tests included verification of head-discharge relations for both a curved and a more economical straight-line downstream face, and of the addition of a curved section to the upstream abutment walls to improve flow conditions.
