Feasibility Study of Automatic Fabrication of Spectacle Lenses in the Field

Abstract

The review of the state-of-the-art concerned lens fabrication techniques, materials applicable to automatic lens fabrication, and automated fabrication techniques. Over 500 suppliers of plastic materials and other products, optical and opthalmic products, automated optical equipment, and automated plastic fabricating equipment were contacted by letter. Follow-up letters were sent when items of extreme interest were uncovered or when no reply was forthcoming. A literature survey was begun, searching for articles related to plastic lenses, opthalmic and optical techniques and products, automated lens fabrication techniques, and plastic automated fabrication techniques. A prelimi- nary evaluation of the material was begun. Preliminary analysis of Army field operations related to optical laboratories was initiated as well as the definition of requirements for the combat soldier. In addition, analysis of existing lens and spectacle manufacturing technology, both for plastic and glass opthalmic lenses, was also started.
