Tensile Strength of Elastomeric Dental Impression Material.

Abstract

Of 11 elastomeric impression materials, 6 with a polysulfide base and 5 with a silicone base were evaluated relative to tensile strength. Samples were placed in an Instron Universal Testing Machine and stretched until they separated. Strength was measured in terms of the work required to pull the material apart, with work being expressed as a function of the force and time required to break the material. The 22 test specimens included: Class 3 syringe body material; material of 50% mixture, by weight, of Class 3 syringe body and Class 2 regular body materials. Some Class 3 syringe body materials proved to be stronger than their respective mixtures with Class 2 regular elastomers. These data indicated that, generally, Jelcone was the stronger of the materials tested. (Author)
