An Operating System Model for Real-Time Applications.

Abstract

The basic organization of an operating system is often obscured by the myriad details of a particular implementation. In any context where the conceptual behavior of such systems is of interest it is therefore desirable to have at hand some device is transparent to fundamental concepts but opaque to the details. The purpose of this work is to develop such a device in the form of a logical model of certain operating system functions. In order to test the utility of this model, it is translated into a computer simulation program. Since operating systems for real-time applications are of particular interest here, some features of real-time systems that are built into the computer model are discussed. Finally, some applications of the program, and thus of the logical model, are suggested. The computer program was written in stanford ALGOL-W for an IBM 360/67 computer. The report includes source program listing. (Author)
