On Mode Conversion in the Earth-Crust Waveguide.

Abstract

Adopting an idealized two-dimensional model, the mode conversion problem is solved formally for an abrupt change of waveguide thickness. Some numerical results for the appropriate coupling factors are given. The latter tell us how an incident mode of order m is converted into a mode of order n. It would appear that energy loss due to mode conversion in non-uniform earth-crust waveguides is a relatively unimportant limitation. (Author)
