Instrumentality Theory Predictions of Academic Behavior.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to test instrumentality theory predictions of work effort. The theory suggests that effort exerted on an activity is a function of the probability (instrumentality) of effort leading to certain outcomes weighted by the evaluation of these outcomes. In this research the amount of effort exerted on various tasks by a group of faculty members at a large university was examined. Predictions based on instrumentality theory were tested along with predictions based on modification of the theory. (Author Modified Abstract)
