Star Simulator Calibration Based on the Spectrum of Vega.

Abstract

The photometric calibration of the star simulator at the Space Department Observatory, RAE, based on the best available data on the spectrum of the standard star alpha-Lyrae (Vega), of stellar class AOV, is described. A calibration check with NASA (Goddard Space Flight Center), and the results of ground-based and in-flight sensor checks on the calibration, indicate that the calibration accuracy achieved is well within that required for star sensor calibration tests. The spectra of several AOV type stars in the visible and ultra-violet spectral regions are discussed, the latter being derived from the spacecraft observations during the last decade. The problems associated with extending the spectral range of the simulated star are considered briefly. (Author)
