Simulated Observation of Storms by Radar: Analytic Formulation.

Abstract

TR-72-276(*storms, radar tracking), (*hurricane tracking, meteorological radar), rainfall, refractive index, radar reflections, mathematical models, numerical analysis, simulation, airborneobservation, weatherThe paper provides an analytic formulation of the radar observation of storms. It develops the geometric relationships necessary to describe an airborne radar viewing a storm of large extent, such as a hurricane, over a spherical earth. Earth curvature and refraction are included in specifying location and rain rate throughout the volume of observation. Attenuation and clutter along the propagation path together with reflectivity, signal power, and other measured returns are specified in relation to the three dimensional geometry. The storm is modeled using logarithmic spiral segmented annular bands. (Author)
