Evaluation of a Light-Load, Direct-Reading Hardness Tester.

Abstract

A study is made of a new light-load, direct-reading indentation type hardness tester and its application to measuring the hardness of 5.56mm cartridge cases at standard sidewall positions. The relationship is shown between numbers obtained with the new equipment and those from the Vickers hardness tests, and this correlation is used as a basis for comparing test data. Results show that the new tester can duplicate Vickers hardness gradient patterns presently used to measure and control variations produced by a particular manufacturing process. (Author)
