Thermal Stress Behavior of Polycrystalline Graphite. Part III. Special Purpose Tests.

Abstract

The results obtained in the final phase of a program to evaluate the thermal stress behavior of ATJ-S and AXF-5Q graphite are described. Among the questions examined were: (1) the reasons for an observed discrepancy between the measured and calculated strains in the uniaxial thermal stress tests on ATJ-S graphite; (2) the susceptibility of ATJ-S to stress reversal fracture; (3) the influence of prestressing on thermal stress test results; and (4) the influence of biaxial softening on the calculated thermal stress and strain values. An elevated temperature torsion test facility with a capacity for rapid heat-up to test temperature is described and results obtained in tests on 5 ATJ-S specimens are presented. The development of a 200 KW thermal stress testing facility which uses electron beam teachniques for outside diameter heating is also described. (Author Modified Abstract)
