Homing Guidance (A Tutorial Report)

Abstract

The theory of 'Homing Guidance' for space application is developed for both accelerating and non-accelerating targets. The analytical formulation is developed in a relative, rotating reference frame and consists of a linearization of the exact equations of motion. An intuitive desirability of Proportional Navigation is discussed, and the results are verified analytically for non-accelerating targets. The investigation, which uses fuel consumption as a criterion for evaluation because application to space missions is the chief concern of the paper, shows that the guidance scheme leads to the optimum in the limiting case. Biased Proportional Navigation is examined in an analogous manner, and a similar optimum is obtained for accelerating targets.
