Plasma Cathode for E-Beam Lasers

Abstract

The technical goal of this program is to develop a superior substitute for the thermionic-cathode electron gun used for plasma conditioning in high energy lasers. Specifically, the program is directed toward developing a hollow cathode plasma electron source to replace the thermionic source commonly used in these electron guns. To fulfill the technical goals of the program, a theoretical and experimental development program is being carried out. A small scale prototype of the plasma cathode electron gun has been constructed and tested with excellent results. A high-voltage, full-size module is now under construction.
