An Investigation of Metal-Containing Polyimide Films by Infrared Spectroscopy Method,
Abstract
Contemporary technology has created a need for polymers possessing high thermal stability as well as increased electrical and thermal conductivities and magnetic permeability. This Russian paper deals with attempts at incorporating silver either in metallic form, or as silver acetate, into the polyamic acid state of the polymer produced from the condensation of pyromellitic dianhydride and 4,4' - diaminodiphenyl ether. Upon thermal aging, the infrared spectra of the untreated film and the film containing finely dispersed silver metal indicate cyclization of the amic acid linkages to imide linkages, whereas the film treated with silver acetate shows only partial imidization. This suggests that silver metal cannot be incorporated into the polyimide backbone but silver in the acetate form can be incorporated into the chain either by reaction with or complexation with the amic acid linkage. Data is presented to differentiate between these two mechanisms. (Author)
