Defence of Shipping: A Computer Program for Numerical Solution of a Nonlinear Lanchester Combat Model,

Abstract

The paper describes a computer program developed to set up and integrate a system of Lanchester differential equations describing the progress of an anti-shipping campaign. The equations are strongly nonlinear and the coefficients are complicated functions of the dependent variables. Since no analytic solution seems possible, a Runge-Kutta-Merson method has been used to obtain a numerical solution for specified times. Two different versions of the program exist, each describing a campaign model based on slightly different assumptions. Examples are given showing complete sets of input data and the resulting output.
