Research in Seismology

Abstract

The report gives a summary of the research projects conducted under this contract. These investigations can be grouped into three broad CATEGORIES: (1) Wave propagation in laterally inhomogeneous media, including studies of body waves, surface waves and free oscillations; (2) Source mechanisms of earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions, including questions of the scaling of earthquake spectra, the tidal triggering of earthquakes, and the release of tectonic strain by explosions; (3) Earth structure, with primary emphasis on developing realistic models for seismic-wave attenuation in the upper mantle and for stress within downgoing slabs of lithosphere. Lists of publications and theses completed during the contract year are also included.
