Dynamic Radial Expansion of Helical Springs Due to Longitudinal Impact.

Abstract

Analyses and experiments were conducted on the dynamic radial expansion of helical springs under impact loading. The basic equations of motion were normalized to retain terms of the same order. A mathematical model by which the radial expansion is described as the result of a two-wave interaction was developed by use of suitable approximations to the modified equations of motion. An expression was derived that showed the dynamic radial expansion to be a function of the mean coil diameter, helix angle, and the ratio of impact velocity to the axial surge wave velocity. Impact tests were made on specially designed springs, and the resulting motions were recorded with a high-speed camera. (Author Modified Abstract)
