Thermocouple Measurement of Heat Flux and Application to Ignition of Wood
Abstract
Measurements reported here on flames from thickened hydrocarbons indicate that close to, but outside, the flame outline the thermocouple temperature can be converted to the heat flux emitted by the flame. From the thermocouple data, the dependence of the time to ignition for a wood target outside the flame on the angle from the flame symmetry axis is established. For angles less than about 10 degrees, the ignition time is relatively constant; for larger angles, it increases rapidly. The dependence of the time to ignition on the height above the flame agent is also established; it incrases rapidly with increasing height. Measurements reported here on the ignition of wood confirm the predicted dependence of the ignition time on the time-dependent of the ignition time on the time-dependent incident heat flux intensity.
