Structure-Reactivity Relationships of Some Benzylidenemalonocarbonyls.

Abstract

The chemical reactivity of some benzylidenemalonocarbonyls with a nucleophile, 2-diethylaminoethyl mercaptan, is evaluated. Polarographic half-wave potentials (E(1/2)) and chemical rate constants (k1) of 20 compounds are used to establish the correlations. Diethyl benzylidenemalonates, ethyl benzylideneacetoacetates, 3-benzylidene-2,4-pentanediones, and benzylidenemalonamides give linear relationships of E(1/2) and 1n k(1). The first three series are linearly intercorrelated while the remaining one is not. The difference could be due to an alteration in the electrode process of the benzylidenemalonamide series.
