The Relationship of Blood-Brain Barrier Damage to Survival Time after Acute Radiation Injury.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a relationship exists between alterations of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the survival time of rats exposed to supralethal irradiation. BBB alterations were produced by injection of glycerol, mercuric chloride, or by lymphatic cervical blockade. Animals were subsequently exposed to a supralethal dose of radiation, and the survival times of various groups were compared. The production of BBB alterations prior to irradiation did not influence the survival time of rats after exposure to supralethal doses of radiation suggesting that BBB damage may bear no direct relationship to the survival time after radiation injury.
