An Analysis of Environmental Data for Use in Updating Low Frequency Propagation Loss Forecasts.

Abstract

An acoustic model for low frequency (100-2400 HZ) propagation loss within a surface duct is examined. An analysis of the sensitivity of this model as a function of the governing environmental parameters is performed. The results of this analysis show that the frequency and mixed layer depth are influential over a wide range of environmental conditions and that the below layer thermal gradient becomes important at low frequencies when the layer depth is relatively shallow. Under certain conditions, a change in below layer thermal gradient of 2F/100 FT has the same resultant effect as a 25 FT change in the mixed layer depth. (Author Modified Abstract)
