Investigation of the Performance of a Gas-Loaded Variable Conductance Heat Pipe.

Abstract

A variable conductance heat pipe was designed and constructed to study the performance characteristics of the gas loaded heat pipe with particular emphasis on the effect of gravity. Heat inputs were varied from 10 to 50 watts and the operating position of the pipe was varied from horizontal to vertical with the condenser above the evaporator. Condenser temperature profiles are presented for various heat inputs and positions for the conventional and gas loaded heat pipe. The possibility of stratification in a horizontal heat pipe operating with a non-condensable gas that has a larger molecular weight than the working fluid is discussed based on observations presented.
