Polytoroidal Tunneling Thruster for Specialized Navy Applications.
Abstract
The report introduced an application of vermiculating or worm-like motion, a motion in which a longitudinal wave traverse one of the contacting surfaces in the direction of motion. The high force tunneling thruster was selected as the most promising of several applications. A model polytoroidal thruster using small tire inner tubes as toroidal bladders to operate within a transparent cylinder was fabricated and tested. The use of a transparent cylinder permitted direct observation of the distensions of the inflating and deflating rubber toroids. By positioning the cylinder vertically, thrust loads in the form of dead weights were used for testing. Observation of bladder distortions during operation provided qualitative data.
