Observations and First Results from Project SYNOPS 71.

Abstract

The scientific objectives, the design criteria, and field operations of Project SYNOPS 71 are described. The results show that dominant fluctuations range on time scales from semidiurnal tides up to several days. The previously observed temporary occurrence of deep southward flow is interpreted as a manifestation of a barotropic wave of a 4-to-5-day period and an amplitude of about 15 cm/sec superimposed on the mean baroclinic profile of the Florida Current. Topographic effects seem to be responsible for the baroclinic structure of this wave over the Miami Terrace. Additional consequences of the several-day wave are horizontal east-west shifts of the current, fluctuations of mass transport, and horizontal advective shifts of the thermal front, leading to local temperature anomalies of plus or minus 2C at the depth of the largest horizontal temperature gradient.
