High Enthalpy Extraction Experiments in a Large Non-Equilibrium MHD Generator.

Abstract

The paper reports on some experiments in a shock tunnel driven-MHD generator which was designed to achieve enthalpy extractions of up to 20%. The MHD channel design changes consisted in doubling the area ratio to 6, increasing the length to 1.5m increasing the peak magnetic field strength to 4 Tesla. To date, up to 1200 KW, representing 12.6% enthalpy extraction, has been obtained in cesium seeded neon at 3470K and 2.2 Tesla. The power output was uniformly distributed along the entire channel length. Analyses of the gas dynamic data showed that, unlike the previous generators, the present generator has not reached choking conditions at the maximum enthalpy extraction. Thus, extension of the present experiments to higher magnetic fields should yield consideralbly higher enthalpy extractions. (Author)
