Tunable CW Dye Lasers.

Abstract

The earlier work carried out under this contract has resulted in the construction and investigation of the properties of a CW dye laser. The device which has evolved from this work has shown remarkable stability, ruggedness and freedom from destructive failure over prolonged periods of time. However, the simplicity of the design introduced, as an unavoidable consequence, the presence of parallel surfaces on the boundary of the flowing dye solution. Due to the discontinuity of the refractive index across these boundaries and the resulting etalon effect, the laser output consists of multiple lines. For some applications this is a highly desirable property, but when a single line output is required it does introduce problems. A method to suppress the extra lines is described. The transient response of the laser to a square pulse of excitation is explained and a preliminary analysis of the role played by detergents which are commonly added to dye solutions is discussed.
