Research Directed Toward Experimental Investigation of Electrophoresis in Plasmas.

Abstract

The report summarizes the results of studies of certain phenomena which occur in dc gas discharges. Emphasis has been placed on the experimental determination of the relative ionic species present in dc capillary discharges for the noble gases. The reliability and theoretical interpretation of these results is considered. Techniques are discussed which enable ion sampling measurements to be made in the presence of striations. Longitudinal pressure gradient studies have been conducted in the same apparatus as used for ion sampling. Cataphoresis measurements using ion sampling techniques have been performed in He-N2 mixtures. Ion sampling methods applied to Xe-Hg mixtures indicate the presence under certain conditions of a variety of complex ions. (Author)
