Experiences with Balloon-Borne Telescopes.

Abstract

In a preceding contract, F19628-69-C-0167, a 24-inch telescope system for studying the moon was produced, and work was begun on a 50-inch system. In the continuing program the larger telescope was fabricated and used, and the capability of the 24-inch equipment was extended for planetary experiments, and later a further modification of this equipment for daytime tracking was started. This report includes a description of the 24-inch system in its various forms, and of the 50-inch system as well. Mention is made of the flight program in which the 24-inch system was launched in three lunar experiments and one Mars experiment, and the 50-inch system was twice launched in experiments aimed at studying both Venus and Mars. In addition to the telescope program, two models of an azimuth-only stabilization system were designed and built. (Author)
