Laser Propagation Temporal Spectra

Abstract

The research is aimed at providing theoretical support to the RADC Laser Propagation Program in the areas of atmospheric propagation phenomena and microturbulence statistics. The efforts in the report are in support of the experimental program being conducted at RADC. The phase difference temporal spectrum was evaluated for arbitrary orientation of the phase observation points in a plane perpendicular to the beam axis. The calculation was based on the method of spectral expansions and the Rytov approximation but the equations were rearranged to emphasize their relationship to the physical picture using a phase screen model. The calculation uses a generalized index of refraction spectrum which has arbitrary power law dependence in the inertial subrange and includes outer-scale effects. This generalization allows one to directly test phase difference spectra measurements to check the generally accepted kappa to the (- 11/3) power dependence. The development also allows a direct evaluation of the outer-scale.
