Shipboard HF Transmitting Antenna System Design and Utilization Criteria for Ionospheric Path Circuits.

Abstract

The report presents the results of a study to develop design guidance for a shipboard hf transmitting antenna subsystem in its total environment for ionospheric path communications to 7000km and to predict hf communications system performance for comparison with CNO Mid-Range Plan requirements. Environmental parameters are shown to exert the largest influence on circuit reliability; an antenna's average gain is shown to be an extremely important parameter; and data rate is shown to be the determining factor in requirements for circuit reliability at a given range in terms of numbers and types of modems, levels of diversity, receivers, transmitters, and transmitter power.
