Explosive Cladding Major Caliber Gun Barrels. Feasibility Study

Abstract

The purpose of the program was to determine the feasibility of, and the parameters for, explosively cladding A1S1 4130 steel liner to the inner diameter of an expended 5 inch diameter gun barrel. The initial work consisted of developing the parameters for cladding flat plates; later these parameters were expanded to include cylindrical cladding of expended portions of 5 inch diameter gun barrels. Seven experimental tests were conducted using expended gun barrel portions. These tests proved the feasibility of gun barrel cladding.
