Radiosonde Systems for the Study of Warm Cloud Development.

Abstract

The design criteria, construction details and electrical circuits of three radiosonde instrument systems are presented. The electrical potential gradient radiosonde (EPGR) measures the atmospheric potential gradient (0 to plus or minus 1500 V/m) in and around warm clouds. The raindrop charge radiosonde (RCR) measures the in-cloud raindrop charge (minimum charge detectable 10 to the minus 5th power e.s.u.). The raindrop charge-size radiosonde (RCSR) measures the in-cloud raindrop size (minimum size detectable 0.6 mm), as well as the charge. Through the use of a novel switching circuit, the radiosonde systems also transmit the ambient temperature, pressure and relative humidity to the ground. Examples of the data derived from radiosonde soundings are presented. (Author)
