An Experimental Technique for Investigating Stress Intensity Around Surface Flaws.
Abstract
An experimental technique for investigating the stress intensity around surface flaws is presented. The photoelastic stress freezing and slicing method is used to determine the stress intensity factor at various points around the circular edge of a surface flaw embedded in a plate subjected to extensional loads. The effect of the flaw depth to plate thickness ratio is included in this work. Data from three different geometries are compared to interpolated and extrapolated results from the best theory presently available. A second photoelastic technique was applied to the same geometry and loading as the first experiment and good agreement of the two methods was obtained. (Author)
