Investigating Automotive Gear Lubricant Copper Corrosivity

Abstract

An investigation was initiated to identify relationships between copper strip ratings and organic acidity/alkalinity values for gear oils meeting both military and commercial factory-fill specifications. No correlation was found to exist between organic acidity and copper strip ratings. As no other trends were evidenced, further modifications to the D130 technique were considered in an attempt to define gear oil corrosivity towards other ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
