A Resource Sharing Executive for the ARPANET

Abstract

The RSEXEC (Resource Sharing Executive) is an experimental, distributed executive-like system currently operational on a number of PDP-10 (TENEX) Hosts on the ARPA computer network. The RSEXEC enlarges the range of storage and computing resources accessible to a user to include those beyond the boundaries of his local system. It includes a command language interpreter which extends the effects of user commands to include all TENEX Hosts in the ARPANET (and for certain commands some non-TENEX Hosts) and a monitor call interpreter which, in a similar manner, extends the effect of program initiated 'system' calls. This paper discusses considerations that led to the RSEXEC system, and describes the system in terms of the capabilities offered to the user and the approach taken to the implementation.
