Water Performance Test of a Propeller Equipped M-561 1-1/4 Ton Truck.

Abstract

Water performance tests of an M-561, 6x6, 1-1/4 Ton, Floating Truck, are described. The vehicle was fitted with two 10x17-inch propellers which were each driven by 50 HP hydraulic motors. The objective of the test series was to establish an optimum propeller location and to determine trade-offs between maximum water speed and control. The maximum still water speed was 6.2 mph with the propellers located amidships, or 65 inches apart at the rear of the vehicle. The maximum single propeller speed was 4.9 mph. The speed using only the wheels for propulsion was 2.1 mph. The best control was achieved with the propellers located amidships. The maneuverability of the propeller equipped M-561 ranked well with amphibious vehicles tested previously. (Author)
