Holodontography: An Introduction to Dental Laser Holography.

Abstract

The science of laser holography may significantly change the concepts and procedural techniques of future dentistry. Through the modifying and combining of existing laser, holographic, and computer technology for intraoral use, individual 'toothprints; may be computerized. As a result, the dentition of patients may be permanently recorded for use in: dental examination; forensic odontology; oral diagnoses; security identification procedures; and fixed and removable prosthetic applications, including computer milling of crowns from contour holograms. Explained and discussed are the basic concepts and forms of laser holography, holographic interferometry, contour holographic thermography, and stress holography, as well as their possible dental applications. Also presented are techniques developed for holographing such relevant objects as mandibles, skulls, arches, dental casts, prosthetic appliances, and individual teeth. (Author)
