An Investigation of the AC Susceptibility of Some RCo5 Compounds.

Abstract

The ac susceptibilities of powdered samples of SmCo5, YCo5, and NdCo5 have been measured at frequencies between 1.5 and 75 kHz and at temperatures between 4.2 and 300K. No definite frequency dependence was noted. Except near the spin reorientation temperatures of NdCo5 and PrCr5, the susceptibility is very low, indicating extensive pinning of domain walls. Near 150K, NdCo5 shows an unusual dependence on the cooling rate. Field sweeps of the order of plus or minus 100 Oe show time and field dependences including disaccommodation, a sweep rate dependence and a field turnaround anomaly. These observations are discussed on the basis of a tentative model of domain wall pinning. (Author)
