A Model for Understanding the Driver's World,
Abstract
Any question-answering system must be able to understand the questions it is given so it can arrive at the proper answers to the questions. To understand the questions the system must have a model of the domain of discourse in which it is operating. Such a model will be used by the system to help transform English input into a structure which can be operated upon by the system and it will be used to find answers to questions. Four problems which must be handled by a model for understanding are presented. These problems are the need to fill in information, the need to be able to generate specific questions when the system does not have sufficient information to answer the input question, the need to handle what are referred to as scene modifiers, and the need to be able to generate relationships for answers. A model for understanding the driver's world which solves the four problems is then presented. (Author Modified Abstract)
