Truncated Sequential Test Plans to Supplement MIL-STD-781B.

Abstract

The report is intended to supplement MIL-STD-781B with additional reliability 'accept/reject' test plans which facilitate specifications to demonstrate equipment mean time between failures. In the past, military procurements have specified accept/reject criteria for demonstrating reliability (mean time between failure) of shipboard equipment by use of Mil-STD-781D sequential test plans. Basic limitations of these plans have been their number and the inability to calculate actual consumer and producer risks associated with sample sizes of one or two pieces of equipment when the effect of varying the total operating time for a test is desired. The computer-oriented method used to develop a sequential test plan for reliability demonstration enables an engineer to examine tradeoffs of actual producer and consumer risk, and short test time.
