Domains of Validity of High Frequency Methods Used in Wave Propagation Problems.

Abstract

Four high frequency approximations appropriate to problems concerned with wave propagation in stratified media are studied to gain some insight into their domains of validity. The four schemes - ray theory, complex ray theory, diffracted ray theory, and the Caustic Boundary Layer approximation (sometimes referred to as modified ray theory) - are investigated through comparisons with exactly known results and experimental data.
