Environmental Endurance Testing of an Elastomeric Pitch Change Bearing

Abstract

The results of pre-endurance and environmental endurance testing of the LM- 726-1 elastomeric pitch change bearing designed for the all-elastomeric rotor in the AH-lG helicopter are presented. Testing was conducted to form a basis for determining the airworthiness of the bearing in terms of expected reliability and inspection and replacement criteria. Pre- endurance testing was intended to establish the bearings' performance characteristics and suitability for environmental endurance testing. Torsional, axial, and radial load- deflection curves are presented. The results of an axial repeated load test are discussed, and data from a limited experimental stress analysis is presented. Pre-endurance testing showed the LM-726-1 bearing to be suitable for environmental endurance testing.
