Forces on Cylinders Oscillating in Water.

Abstract

A circular cylinder immersed in an infinite fluid and oscillated perpendicular to its axis is acted upon by a fluid dynamic force. This force is generally considered to be composed of two components, a drag and an added mass component. The relative importance of these are functions of the frequency and displacement of the cylinder. It was the purpose of the study to determine experimentally these two components as a function of the ratio of the displacement amplitude to the cylinder diameter, and the Reynolds number based on the maximum velocity.
