Radiative Transfer under Nonlocal Thermodynamic Equilibrium Conditions. Volume III. Physics of a Nonequilibrium Plasma.

Abstract

The volume describes the physics necessary to treat the time evolution of a finite plasma under the influence of a radiation field. The atomic physics includes radiative transition rates for hydrogenic ions and approximations to the collision rates for such ions. An approximate treatment of line radiation makes calculations for finite systems feasible. A model for nonhydrogenic ions is given which requires a minimal tabulation of atomic data but retains essential properties of such ions. The methods are applied to a planetary nebula and are shown to give reasonable results. (Author)
