Alternative Radiological Systems.

Abstract

The study examines standby radiological systems having minimal peacetime costs that can be readied in a crisis for maximal savings of lives in a nuclear emergency. The existing radiological defense (RADEF) system is described in terms of instruments, personnel, and plans. Radiological system requirements are derived from the emergency actions required under various attack damage and fallout conditions. The advantages and disadvantages of RADEF system alternatives are identified along with some key issues to be faced in designing a standby RADEF system. The advantages and disadvantages of incorporating various peacetime capabilities into a standby RADEF system are also identified. (Author Modified Abstract)
